Perhaps a tad more reader effort required in this visually rich issue. To steal our own sub-title, matter and messages steal centre stage, with the fascinating natural structures of Gyongy Laky and Ivan Chermayeff’s award-winning collages.

Oscar Mariné’s fusion of art with advertising reminds us how such an integration can enhance communication, while the Japanese theatre tickets, presented by Steven Heller, provide a decorative interlude.

And, the intriguing story of the design of the Oscars, told by Beryl McAlhone contrasts with Quentin Newark’s oblique view of the typeface corpus.

Visually rich then and thought provoking. More to prove that the boundaries between type, typography, and art, can be intentionally blurred to good effect.

K.K.K. Using these three initials (nothing to do with the Klu Klux Klan) Herbert Lechner, for the magazine Novum, defined the idiosyncrasy of the work of Oscar Mariné as the result of the interaction between Kunst (Art), Kultur (Culture) and Kreativität (Creativity). The interrelation of these different areas is the motor of his concept of design, far from any watertight compartment, which isolates it from a general conception of the world. Mariné reveals life‘s existential dimension through an expressionist language, emphasizing the things that have most impact and roundedness…
